I suspect this means the situation is far worse in the DC area than they thought.

Yeah kids would normally
go to mid-June here (Fairfax County)
, so it’s quite a chunk. Seems unclear if they will try to do the distance thing or just pack it in.

I’m out in Prince William, but I teach at a Private School. We are doing distance learning much like many colleges. The digital divide is a very real thing that public schools have to contend with as well as how to provide accommodations to students with IEPs and 504s.

This is going to be the rest of the country, others just haven’t announced it yet. September is probably optimistic, too.

As we’ve discussed I don’t think it will take that long, but I do think schools will remain shut through the end of the school year.
It’s clear that there are a lot of cases out there right now.

I hope you’re right, but I’d b e more inclined to believe it if Cuomo and Fauci weren’t publicly throwing around 9 month and 18 month shutdown/lockdown timelines, respectively.

Neither has said those as far as I can see .
F auci has talked about lockdown for “ several weeks”. His comments about 12-18 months are in regards to vaccine development and testing, but you don’t need a vaccine to end the lockdowns, you just need to be able to find and isolate the infected.
Cuomo said the pandemic could last nine months, but again, that doesn’t mean the lockdown must last that long if we can manage the spread during that time.

Yeah I suspect there might be some “optional” learning, but most kids will be doing a Ph.D. in Fortnite.

Yeah it’s gonna be rough for a lot of folks. I’m used to having the kiddos around and working from the house but for a lot of people it’s going to be a bad situation.

I don’t know, I think if they’re still finding new cases or counting new deaths or admitting new patients to hospital, even if its manageable numbers, there’re not going to be keen on loosing anything up.

I suspect as much. Many universities have already done it; my daughter’s school is starting remote/online today; they say they still plan to reopen in April, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen. We’re hunkering down to adjust life.

I am working on that assumption. Our schools in NH are only closed until April 3rd, officially. But there’s no f-ing way the kids are going back then. Zero.

not to be a conspiracy theorist on you guys, but like i just said in another post I have symptoms that match covid-19. They told me NOT to go to a hospital and test. They are holding test kits for people with more severe symptoms and more at-risk patients.
I’m the 3rd person just from my office that has been given these same instructions/diagnosis.
think about how many are just like me that aren’t being tested so we’re not on the “confirmed cases” list. The Johns Hopkins tracker has the US at almost 42k cases as of just a minute ago when I checked. With all the people being told to stay home and not test, there has to be over 100k. I know the Michigan number is BS at least.

Down here in Oz, there are mixed messages. Victoria has bought forward their Easter school holidays. NSW has said the schools are open for the remainder of the term but please don’t send in your kids if you don’t have to...and the rest are open. At least until the Easter break. After that...online learning for Term 2 (until June) is my expectation.
The Lad is home with me...and I am an awful substitute teacher.

I’ve had this conversation with several people and it is our consensus too. I also think I have a co-worker who got it during a trip to denver and back. She has not been tested, and has not been in the office since she left thank god . My guess is the number of people in the US with the virus is 100x more than have tested positive.

I wonder how many of these schools are eager to get the summer construction going, as that is an “essential” business.
I was supposed to be done with this job last week but since the Missouri kids are out, they didn’t mind it going longer. Also my boss didn’t want to send people last week.

The only option at this point is to not overwhelm the hospital system. You aren't displaying symptoms and aren't in duress, so seeking hospital care would tie up resources they want free for real emergencies. They aren't hiding anything, they are trying to manage a situation that from a numbers standpoint looks unmanageable.

On one hand if you are having severe trouble, just asking you to stay at home (they did ask you to stay at home right?) is fine, and keeps resources available. On the other, if we want to get things back to normal, we need to actually test everyone, not just triage.
Also as a Hopkins grad, thanks for remembering the ‘s’ on Johns!

First, g otta have the S in John s!
Second, I have symptoms (chest pain (feels like a bowling ball on my chest) , winded, cough, low grade fever, etc) a nd they aren’t enough for me to go to the hospital, I think you’re missing my point. I don’t want to waste resources or space at a hospital. I’m on a 7 day or 72 hours past the fever going away lock down quarantine (whichever is longer) . Keeping the family here too for public safety.
The point I’m making is the numbers on the news are severe cases, not the total cases. Our case total is massively higher than the published numbers. This impacts the public realizing how wide spread it is. It's because when the government was told in January this was coming they didn't pull their head out of their ass and start preparing (masks, test kits, etc).

I am displaying symptoms. I have:
a low grade fever
Chest pressure (feels like an 8 pound bowling ball on my chest that won’t fall off)
Shortness of breath
Dry cough
Body aches/joint pain (common fever stuff)
I don’t want to overwhelm the hospital and I support them not using a test kit on me. The point I’m making is I have obvious symptoms but will never be included in the count because those are confirmed cases. My doctors write up was “symptoms consistent with COVID-19" but they don’t want to use a kit on me at this time unless symptoms advance. I get it. I’m quarantined for 7 days or 72 hours after fever is gone ( whichever is longer).
There are 2 others at my work with similar symptoms and a similar response from the Dr. To me, that implies there are probably a ton of people that most likely have it they are not being tested and we therefore don’t know how widespread it is. I’m not criticizing the Dr or the hospital. There simply aren’t enough test kits for us to know the real numbers.

Thankfully I’ve been working from home for 9 days now. 2 other people have similar symptoms near where I sit tho, and I suspect the one woman who always comes into work when sick. She’s been ordered home 3 times in the past 12 months for showing up contagious with something . We can work from home I don’t understand this person.

Thanks, honestly I’m better than I was yesterday. Sorry if that came out angry, I’m just frustrated with the optics of this. Trump is at the podium telling people it’s no big deal we’ll be normal in 3 weeks and I’m like, you have NO IDEA how wide spread this is. And you're actively ignoring medical professionals because you're worried about the stock market.

This seems a solid plan. Sleep was difficult last night. I may take TWO naps today.
Work has approved unlimited STO for those in need. Trying not to take advantage giving I ’m sitting at home in comfy clothes anyhow. But with only about 4- 5 hours of sleep, I think a couple naps are due.
